Our History

Founded in 1880, Starrett manufactures more than 5,000 variations of tools and saw blades for industrial, professional and consumer markets worldwide. Setting the standard for fine precision tools in industry for over 140 years, Starrett has rightfully earned the title, “World’s Greatest Toolmakers”.

2021

Starrett Europe launch their Professional Knives range.

All of Starrett’s saw production is consolidated in Brazil, making it the world’s biggest saw factory

2019

Starrett reaches the mark of producing 27,000 km of saws in one year

2016

Starrett expands operations with a third bi-metal saw production line and new electron beam (EB) welding saw line

The MeatKutter saw production line is established at Starrett Brazil

2011

New US factory established in Columbus, Georgia

New US factory established in Laguna Hills, California

New US factory established in Waite Park, Minnesota

Starrett opens Chinese factory in Suzhou, giving the company a foothold in Asia

Douglas A. Starrett, son of Douglas R. Starrett is appointed President

1990

Starrett purchases assets of Sigma Optical, UK for Starrett Metrology Solutions

1986

Starrett Evans Rule Division in North Charleston, South Carolina joins the L.S. Starrett Company Ltd

1985

New US factory established in Mount Airy, North Carolina

1970

Starrett acquires the Herman Stone Co. of Dayton, Ohio, a manufacturer of granite surface plates

1962

Douglas R. Starrett succeds his father as president and establishes a new US branch in Cleveland, Ohio

1958

Factory founded in Jedburgh, Scotland

1956

South American factory founded in São Paulo, Brazil

1946

Arthur H. Starrett, the founder’s grandson, assumes presidency

1939

David Findlay is appointed President. Having joined the company at 21-years-old he worked his way up through the ranks to General Sales Manager, Director and Vice President, before becoming President

1922

Company founder, L.S Starrett passes away at a time when his Athol factory is being hailed as the largest plant in the world wholly devoted to making fine mechanical tools. Frank A. Ball, Mr Starrett’s son-in-law succeeds him as President

1920

First indicator is made, designed to check curvature in spectacles

1900

The company was incorporated, with L.S. Starrett as President and Treasurer

1882

Mr Starrett travels abroad and establishes selling connections in London and Paris

1881

Starrett upgrades to a larger premises in Athol

1880

The company was founded by Laroy S. Starrett with the construction of the first Starrett factory in Athol, Massachusetts, USA
